The Val d'Isere snow report is saying "Gripping Snow" which as term that I have hitherto been unaware of.

    Can anyone explicate?

To me it means snow that you can hold an edge on even in high speed super G style turns.

I saw your post as I was about to make the same comment.  I rejoined ski club this year and have so far felt the snow reports have become fairly pointless (perhaps they always were if you had pre-booked a holiday and you get what you get I suppose).
Gripping snow reported almost all season at several resorts after, apparently from other sources, many cm of snowfall, and 0cm snow reported at many/all resorts over previous 7 days.  Lazy Ski Club - hardly a service.
